Our history
History of the House
A house that has welcomed guests since 1827
For nearly two centuries, Maison Coeurdacier has opened its doors to travellers passing through Monthureux-sur-Saône. Five generations of the same family have lived here, each in their own way, before we gave the house back its original purpose today: welcoming guests.
1827-1905: the beginnings, a restaurant and village inn
It all began in 1827. Our ancestors ran a restaurant and a small village inn here, a stopping place for travellers and merchants passing through the region — it is this era that the name of the Merchants' Room recalls today.
1880-1905: the Géromé cheese, Théophile's renown
Before taking over the family hotel, Théophile Coeurdacier made a name for himself as a cheesemaker. At the Ferme du Bignovre, near Monthureux-sur-Saône, trained at the Saulxures-sur-Moselotte Agricultural School, he produced a Géromé cheese — the Vosges side of this traditional cheese, the Lorraine counterpart to Munster. His cheeses won several medals at Lorraine's agricultural fairs between 1889 and 1895, including gold: a quality recognised well beyond the village. It was this same demand for excellence that he would bring, a few years later, to welcoming his guests.
1905-1934: Théophile Coeurdacier
In 1905, our grandfather Théophile Coeurdacier took over the family hotel. He ran it for nearly thirty years, until 1934. It is in his memory that we named the Théophile Room, today our largest suite.
When he took over the hotel-restaurant, Théophile gave up cheesemaking and added a new service: horse-drawn carriage hire. A large sign on the façade proudly announces it: “Voitures à volonté” (carriages at your service), meaning carriages available to travellers on request. The photo below shows him with his carriage, a victoria (a four-wheeled carriage with a folding hood, drawn by a single horse), in 1906.
1934-1941: Maria carries on alone
From 1934, his wife Maria took sole charge of the hotel for seven years. The Maria Room, today our ground-floor room, bears her name in memory of her courage and her presence.
1941-1990: the family home
In 1941, our parents Renée Cœurdacier and René Magnien moved into the house. They ceased the hotel business: for nearly fifty years, the house then became the family home — a place of life, memories and heritage rather than a place to welcome travellers.
1990-2020: the empty house
From 1990, the house stood empty for thirty years, dormant, before finding new life.
2025: the rebirth
In 2025, we, Raynald and Valérie Magnien Coeurdacier, chose to give the house back its original purpose by creating our guest house here. Restoring this place, so rich in history, was for us a way of paying tribute to Théophile, to Maria, and to everyone who lived here before us — while offering our guests thoroughly modern comfort.
