Things to do around Monthureux-sur-Saône, in the Vosges

Darney forest, La Rochère glassworks, the Renaissance village of Châtillon-sur-Saône, loops along the Saône, cycling the Voie Bleue, good places to eat: this is what you can discover around Maison Coeurdacier, our guest house in Monthureux-sur-Saône. Vittel and Contrexéville are 20 to 30 minutes away by car.

Where are we?

Maison Coeurdacier is in Monthureux-sur-Saône (88410), in a quiet village in the Vosges. Vittel and Contrexéville are 20 to 30 minutes away by car.

We are not a hotel but a guest house: three guest rooms, a gîte for 2 to 6 people and a holiday house for 15 people. The house was, however, once a small family village hotel, run by Théophile, then by Maria, until 1941: discover the history of the house.

Breakfast is served in the restored old kitchen or in the garden.

In the heart of the Darney forest

The village lies in the heart of a great oak forest, the Darney forest, which carries the “Forêt d'Exception” label. Hiking and mountain-bike loops start from the village and lead through the surrounding woods and countryside.

In the village and around

Monthureux-sur-Saône is best explored on foot. Visit the church of Saint-Michel and its Entombment in the Rhenish style, in polychrome wood from the 15th century, then the Maison du Patrimoine (museum, visits by appointment), the Jardin des Marronniers and the 1850 cemetery in the middle of the forest.

From the Place de la République, a walk of about 1 hour 30 minutes leads to the Préfonrupt Espace Naturel Sensible, a protected wetland, then returns to the village by the Pont des Prussiens and the Chemin du Breux, behind the gardens of Rue de l'Église. The old wash-house (lavoir) is the entrance to an educational forest site, and a playground (zip line, roundabout, swing) will delight the little ones.

In the village: shops, services and parking

Monthureux-sur-Saône has kept its local shops, in the heart of the village: a butcher's, two bakeries, a small supermarket, a pharmacy and a post office. There is also an electric vehicle charging point in the village.

Boucherie-charcuterie Mettot (butcher and delicatessen), right opposite the house: a shop we recommend, with charcuterie made on the premises and a catering service.

25 rue de l'Hôtel de Ville

30 rue de l'Hôtel de Ville

Pharmacy, Place de la République. The doctors are based at the Pré-Favet health centre (03 29 09 19 19).

For a bigger shop, the Intermarché supermarket in Darney is about 10 km away (10 minutes by car).

Where to park?

You can park your car in front of the house (leaving the pavement clear) or in the free parking spaces in the street.

Forest walks start five minutes from the house, on the edge of the village.

The Saône, from its source to the port of Corre

The Saône is very much present in the village of Monthureux-sur-Saône, where the river winds in two loops.

It rises at Vioménil, about 22 km from the house (23 minutes by car): a modest, peaceful spot at the foot of the Faucilles cliff. A walk of about 8 km links the source to La Pille, a former glass-makers' hamlet.

Further south, at Corre, in Haute-Saône (about 15 km, 17 minutes by car), the Canal des Vosges joins the Saône: the river port welcomes pleasure boats and has a restaurant.

By bike or motorbike: a detour well worth making

The Voie Bleue (Moselle–Saône by bike) runs for about 700 km from Sierck-les-Bains, on the Luxembourg border, to Lyon, following the Moselle, the Canal des Vosges and then the Saône. It passes through Corre, about 15 km from the house: for cyclists, it is well worth the detour to come and stay with us. Find the route and its stages on the official Voie Bleue website.

We have a garage: your bikes are kept under cover and electric bikes can be recharged there. Motorbikes are also sheltered in the garage.

The Verrerie de La Rochère, a visit not to be missed

About 15 km from the house (20 minutes by car), at Passavant-la-Rochère in Haute-Saône, the Verrerie de La Rochère has been making glass since 1475: it presents itself as the oldest art glassworks in France.

You can watch the glassblowers at work and discover its gallery and shop. Visits are free for individual visitors. Opening hours change with the season: please check the glassworks website before you go.

It is a must-see in the region.

Châtillon-sur-Saône, a Renaissance village

About 14 km from the house (18 minutes by car), Châtillon-sur-Saône is a village of character where the Middle Ages and the Renaissance meet, at the point where the Saône and the Apance flow together.

Its Renaissance town houses are its pride: the Hôtel du Gouverneur (second half of the 16th century), the Hôtel de Lignéville (dated 1554, with a façade featuring Doric columns) and the former hospital (early 16th century). The Hôtel du Gouverneur and the former hospital are protected historic monuments.

The Maisons musées du Berger et du Coordonnier complete the visit with their reconstructions of the past (a schoolroom, a cobbler's workshop…); one room pays tribute to the landscape painter Jean-Ferdinand Monchablon (1855–1904). Please check the opening hours.

It makes a pleasant stop during a day out in the area.

Bleurville and its crypt

About 5 km from the house (6 minutes by car), the village of Bleurville is home to the former abbey of Saint-Maur, founded by Count Renard II of Toul. Beneath the church, a pre-Romanesque crypt, dated to the 10th century, keeps numerous round, square and octagonal columns: pilgrims came here to venerate the relics of the martyrs Berthaire and Athalein. Please check the visiting conditions before you go.

With children: outings 10 to 20 minutes from the house

Here are a few ideas for outings with children. Opening days and hours change with the season: please check before you set off.

The Centre d'animation de la Préhistoire, in Darney (about 10 km, 10 minutes by car): a space devoted to human evolution, workshops (making fire, painting on stone, making jewellery) and an outdoor park, “Sur les pas du mammouth”, with life-size animals. The site is open mostly in the afternoon, every day in summer.

The Delisvosges sweet factory, in Darney (about 10 km): traditional Vosges sweets made by hand in a former factory by the Saône. On certain afternoons you can watch them being made.

The pond at La Rochère, in Passavant-la-Rochère (about 15 km, 20 minutes): a walk by the water, with light refreshments. It is a nice complement to a visit to the glassworks.

The spa park of Martigny-les-Bains (about 18 km, 20 minutes): this historic spa town has a large park that is free to enter and the Pavillon des Sources of 1882, protected as a historic monument (the pavilion can be visited by appointment).

The museum of glass, iron and wood, in Hennezel (about 15 km, 17 minutes): five centuries of forest craftsmanship, with glassmakers, toolmakers, clog makers, charcoal burners and embroiderers.
